Eat local! Why farm fresh foods are better
Farmer's market season is underway making it the perfect time to get in more fruits and vegetables. We can’t think of a better body boost than leafy greens and blooming berries; but for some, filling half your plate with fresh produce (as recommended by the American Dietetic Association) may be challenging.
Whether you fancy fresh fruits and veggies or maybe silently find them repulsive, the reality is you’re not getting enough.
U.S. Dietary Guidelines recommend consuming 2 1/2 servings of vegetables and 2 servings of fruit per day. The average American eats just over 2.5 servings of fresh fruit and vegetables altogether, which is approximately half of the recommended amount.
Farm fresh foods are not only tastier, but they offer a slew of health benefits, too. It’s been said that certain fruits and veggies have been known to lower blood pressure, help to prevent some forms of cancer and lower your risk of heart disease and stroke.
At Tap Root Fields, we use organic growing practices to feed the soil and our plants to produce healthy food for you. Our farm-fresh beets are great sources of potassium and folate and have been known to improve heart health. Tomatoes are a fantastic source of Vitamin C and black garlic contains antioxidants that may help regulate blood sugar, according to some studies.
With all of that in mind, the summer season is the perfect time to put your best fork forward and up your intake of fruits and vegetables.
Our "Root To You" farm stand is open and we make it easy for you. Visit us at 4272 Jordan Road in Skaneateles. We’re open daily and offer a variety of produce based on what we’re growing and harvesting out in our fields.
